Salute to Youth
What is S2Y?
Salute to Youth Program runs from September to March each year. This program is intended to seek out and present Outstanding Achievement Awards to high school seniors in the Albuquerque community who excelled in high academic and scholastic achievements, school and community leadership, and their commitment to moral and educational excellence. High school seniors and their parents/ parent representatives are given an overview of the program, participant requirements and guidelines, and a schedule of events which culminates the Salute to Youth Gala in March. Participants experience a number of activities intended to prepare them for rigors of college, and an independent life as an adult.
In the fall of 1976, the idea of a Debutante Ball was discussed at length by the members of Iota Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. After much debate, the idea was tabled because it would not fit into the already crowded sorority calendar. In January, 1977, the idea was resurrected and a decision was made to sponsor a Ball. Ideas used for developing the Ball came from fraternal, civic and social groups all over the United States. the ideas became reality and the planning began. By the time all of the plans were made and a date was set, we had only 6 seats left. When the plans were completed, we realized that there were not Debutantes. Iota Xi Omega depended on their families, friends, and their community to spread the word. Nine debutantes were presented at the first Salute to Youth Ball.
